Dr Nafsiah Mboi appointed as APLMA Envoy

The Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are very pleased to announce that Dr Nafsiah Mboi has been appointed APLMA Envoy. APLMA is an alliance of Asian and Pacific heads of government formed to accelerate progress against malaria and to achieve an Asia Pacific free of malaria by 2030.

In her role as APLMA Envoy, Dr Mboi will lead strategic priority-setting for APLMA and will guide APLMA’s engagement in global health diplomacy and country-level political engagement. Dr Mboi will strategically shape the regional malaria elimination and financing agendas by identifying and pursuing specific opportunities for leadership on these issues across the region.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among the main supporters of APLMA, welcomed the appointment of Dr Mboi to this new role.

Dr Mboi has more than 40 years’ experience in national and global public health, including as Minister of Health for Indonesia, Chair of the Board of the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as six years as Secretary of Indonesia's National AIDS Commission and a full career as a civil servant in the Ministry of Health. She was a Member of Indonesia’s Parliament from 1992 to 1997. She has also served as the Director of Department of Gender and Women’s Health at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Originally trained as a paediatrician, Dr Mboi had specialized training in Belgium and the Netherlands. She later earned a Master’s degree in Public Health at Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp and was a Takemi Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.
