Cross border

The challenges associated with cross-border malaria encompass the movement of individuals carrying malaria parasites across international borders, the transmission of malaria itself along these borders, and the risk of re-importation that comes from the mosquitoes’ flight range.

Cross-border malaria refers to the occurrence or potential for malaria transmission across shared land borders. This phenomenon is of increasing concern to countries approaching elimination as, where the malaria parasite reservoir is eliminated within a country, but the vector remains, there is always the risk of re-establishment if parasites are re-imported. For this reason, as countries approach elimination, investment in efforts to prevent importation and re-establishment are stepped up, and these countries often detect their last few cases around border regions.
