Malaria remains a critical public health challenge in Papua New Guinea (PNG), accounting for nearly 90% of reported malaria cases in the Western Pacific Region according to the WHO's 2023 World Malaria Report. Morbidity reports annually have been over 900,000 cases of malaria, and there has been not many reductions in the past eight (8) years. Rural populations, with limited access to health services, are particularly vulnerable.
The current PNG National Malaria Strategic Plan (2021-2025) focuses on improving diagnosis and treatment, building healthcare worker competencies, and promoting quality care within the public sector through strengthening Provincial Health Authorities and increasing community engagement. Recognizing the need for tailored interventions, the National Malaria Control Program is stratifying the malaria burden to develop specific strategies at provincial and district levels for the upcoming 2026-31 national strategic plan.
