Located in Melanesia, Papua New Guinea became a signatory of the APLMA roadmap in 2018. Papua New Guinea is the host of the 8th Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination, in partnership with APLMA.
By 2025, the country aims to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 63 and 90 percent respectively, with a further goal of elimination in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and prevention of transmission reestablishment in that same year.
Papua New Guinea’s uniquely decentralized population makes population data collection difficult, with population centers mainly in the rural highlands and coastal regions to the east of the mainland. Less than a fifth of the population resides in urban areas.
Currently among the countries making up 99% of the Asia Pacific’s malaria burden, Papua New Guinea aims to eliminate malaria by 2030.
