Indonesia

Located in Southeast Asia, Indonesia became a signatory of the APLMA roadmap in 2015.

Indonesia currently accounts for 12% of the total malaria burden in the Asia Pacific. The burden of malaria in Indonesia is heterogenous, with most transmission occurring in high-endemic areas of Papua, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), and East Kalimantan. Papua alone accounts for 88% of the total malaria cases. To accelerate malaria elimination efforts at the subnational level, Indonesia launched its malaria elimination assessments at the subnational level in 2012, aiming to proactively reward successes and encourage districts to continue striving towards elimination.

The malaria elimination strategy focuses on ensuring universal access to malaria case management, while maintaining malaria surveillance as the core intervention of elimination. By strengthening their health system, they aim to create an enabling environment.

Currently among the countries making up 99% of the Asia Pacific’s malaria burden, Indonesia aims to eliminate malaria by 2030.
