Afghanistan

Located in South Asia, Malaria control and elimination interventions in Afghanistan are a work in progress.

The country’s main priority is intensification of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria control interventions in the 46 high malaria burden districts, which includes strengthening malaria case management targeting resident, remote, cross-border populations, and internally displaced people.

Preventive measures such as LLIN distribution among at-risk populations are being scaled-up. Private sector engagement for improved case management and preventative practices, including the improvement of access to services through the engagement of community leaders on malaria and other vector-borne diseases, are currently underway. Currently among the countries making up 99% of the Asia Pacific’s malaria burden, Afghanistan aims to eliminate malaria by 2035.
